Referral fees in Rhode Island

Rhode Island's current rule (Article V, revised October 2023) follows the ABA model. A division of a fee between lawyers not in the same firm is permitted only if the division is proportional to the services performed by each lawyer or each lawyer assumes joint responsibility for the representation. The client must agree to the arrangement, including the share each lawyer will receive, with the agreement confirmed in writing, and the total fee must be reasonable.
